He said using such technological tools to connect with his fans doesn't necessarily mean he upholds a double standard that defies the underlying sentiment of "Modern Love." That's because, he said, the true measure of his bond with his fans comes through his live shows, which New Balance Numeric Pro Court 212
Nathanson tossed all the contrasting dynamics into a musical blender, and the up tempo and hopeful "Modern Love" was the resulting concoction.
This started after his previous release, "Some Mad Hope," scored a hit with the pop ballad "Come On Get Higher."
"As a culture, we are moving toward a more surface based experience," Nathanson said from Alpharetta, Ga., where he was on tour with Train and Maroon 5. "Right now, Twitter and Facebook are becoming the connection. I strongly believe that the good stuff the stuff that is really of a premium is the human collision, and sort of the messier and molten parts of ourselves that don't happen when you're dealing with people on a surface level."
"I don't allow that stuff in because it pollutes the experience. Writing songs and creating music is a gift," he said. "I'd be a fool to pollute this process. Let the songs go, they are the God, they dictate to you what they want. You follow them and abide by them."
"The other thing that happened was my confidence level. I felt validated in a way I haven't felt on a larger level, and that shored up my confidence to make a new record," he said.

The message appears to have resonated among Nathanson's listeners. The June release "Modern Love," his eighth album, has been the San Francisco based artist's biggest commercial success to date.
In a recent telephone interview, Nathanson, who opens for Maroon 5 Friday night at the Reno Events Center, said he was proud of the album's sales numbers, but more interested in the idea that his message was reaching a broader audience.
Although the commercial appeal of "Modern Love" led by the sales power of the radio truffle "Faster" trumps his previous releases, Nathanson said the music wasn't made with a view of the cash register in the crosshairs.
The record debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard chart and spawned a smash hit in "Faster," which has sold more than 500,000 downloads.
That said, Nathanson won't deny there are benefits that come with seeing his name appear on the charts nad hearing his songs on the radio. In addition to reaching a larger fan base, he's had more opportunities to work with other musicians who have his respect.
"It's a concept record with the idea of, 'Where does that molten, volatile part of ourselves exist now, at a time when a premium is not put on those interactions?' All of the songs deal with that perspective," he said.

The core concept of "Modern Love" can be found in the title track. In it, Nathanson sings, "We stumble and disconnect over and over again."

range of musical influences, from Def Leppard to U2, among others. For "Modern Love," he tapped into a snapshot of mid 1980s new wave melodic pop from artists such as Tears For Fears, The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen. The goal was figuring that out," he said of the new wave influence. "I'm always inspired to write songs that maybe have a theme or thread that runs through them. But sonically, I've never approached a record like that, and these songs asked for it.

"Those things help augment and they are neat additions to but they never stand in for real connections," Nathanson said. "I always work from the gut, and that's why the live show is so important. The songs really don't come to life until you're playing a show and they're bouncing off humans, and you're getting that feedback."
