"Coach Homer is not getting the job because he is from Mount Pleasant," Marshall said. "He is not getting it because of family. He's getting the job because he is the best candidate for the job."
"In our athletic program we want the kids in their junior year sitting in the appropriate testing," Homer said. "We don't want our kids to be just athletes."
After a year as a graduate assistant, Homer became an offensive line coach for McKinney North working under Sean Pratt, someone who Homer considers a mentor.
"I'm going to go in and evaluate," Homer said. "Some are Mount Pleasant kids, like myself. Hopefully they will be onboard with that."
"It's a college readiness system for kids in the academic middle," Homer said.
Homer went on to speak of plans for the future like a "Champions Breakfast" matching student athletes with positive local male role models, as his eyes looked past the walls of the System Support Building and beyond Xs and Os.
Homer became head offensive line coach at John Tyler then it was back to McKinney North then on to Plano East where he became assistant head football coach.
Homer is married to the former Casie Elledge, also of Mount Pleasant. They are looking to adopt a child soon.
While all the events of the past year should have left Homer "in a valley," he managed to keep his head up.
"The only person the board hires and fires is the superintendent," Mayfield said. "He (Marshall) made that choice although he did discuss it with the board."
Homer wants to see similar principals applied to Mount Pleasant athletes.
Homer admits 2013 was a rough year for him. Both his father, Ronny Homer, and grandfather, Odis D. Homer, died.
Homer was also enthusiastic about his teaching field, working in a program called AVID which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
"I'm a Christian," Homer said. "I try to find good in situations. There's got to be a greater plan."
"I never felt God had walked away from me," Homer said. "I am so glad I decided to trust him."

After high school, Homer attended Texas A New Balance Uk Made Commerce where he earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees while playing football for the Lions.
"I'm going to evaluate the kids and see what is the best fit," Homer said. "We want to get the kids in the right spots. I know there are good athletes, good kids here."
Homer will take the same approach with the coaching staff.
Homer, a member of the 1995 and 1996 Mount Pleasant High School football teams under Coach Marc McDaniel, was assistant head coach at Plano East High School after stints at McKinney North and John Tyler.
